Start a refund trace: use the IRS's Where's My Refund tool, or call 800-829-1954. If you filed a joint return, you cannot trace it online — call the IRS or file Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund. If the check was never cashed, the IRS cancels it and sends a replacement. If it was cashed by someone else, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service reviews the signature, which can take up to six weeks.

A federal refund check can go missing in the mail or sit uncashed past its "void after" date. This is a federal process through the IRS and the Treasury's Bureau of the Fiscal Service, not a state unclaimed property claim, so it does not go through unclaimed.org.
This is handled by the IRS, not your state. If a federal refund was later turned over as unclaimed property after repeated failed delivery, also search your state's official unclaimed property site by name.
Our 12-minute money check lists nine official searches in a fixed order, with the minutes each one takes: your state (2), savings bonds (1), a lost pension (1), a failed bank (1), a closed credit union (1), an undelivered tax refund (2), an FHA refund (1), veterans' life insurance (1) and federal court funds (2). Nine steps, twelve minutes, and none of them costs a cent. Our 12-minute money check lists an undelivered federal tax refund as one of the nine official searches, right alongside the state search. It is the one search on our list that runs through IRS.gov and Form 3911 instead of unclaimed.org.

Start a refund trace with the IRS: use Where's My Refund, call 800-829-1954, or speak with a representative at 800-829-1040. If you filed jointly, you must call or file Form 3911.
If it was not cashed, the IRS cancels the original and issues a replacement once your trace is processed.
If the original was cashed by someone else, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service reviews the signature on the cashed check, which can take up to six weeks.
It can, if the IRS could not reach you and the refund is eventually reported as unclaimed. Search your state's unclaimed property site by name as a second check.
Once you have done the free searches, The Unclaimed Money Handbook puts every state's office and the paperwork in one PDF. The searches on this site stay free either way.
