What happens to an old 401(k) check you never cashed?

Do not ignore it. Call the plan administrator or the company named on the check and ask whether it is still valid or can be reissued. If the plan could not reach you, the money may have been passed to your state's unclaimed property office.

What this is

When someone leaves a job with a small 401(k), the plan can sometimes move it to an IRA in their name or send a check. If the address is out of date, the money may be passed to the state.

Have this ready

Step by step

  1. Look at the date on the check, then call the plan administrator named on it and ask if it is still valid or can be reissued.
  2. Search your state's unclaimed property site for retirement distributions.
  3. If the plan ended, search PBGC's unclaimed-retirement-benefits page, and try the U.S. Department of Labor's Retirement Savings Lost and Found database.
Before you go

A direct rollover check is usually made out to the new account's custodian, often with "FBO" and your name, so it normally goes into that account. The IRS rollover page explains the time limits that apply when money is paid to you.

How we run this ourselves

Our 12-minute money check lists nine official searches in a fixed order, with the minutes each one takes: your state (2), savings bonds (1), a lost pension (1), a failed bank (1), a closed credit union (1), an undelivered tax refund (2), an FHA refund (1), veterans' life insurance (1) and federal court funds (2). Nine steps, twelve minutes, and none of them costs a cent. We cover lost retirement money in our guide to forgotten 401(k) accounts, and the same three places come up each time: the old employer's plan administrator, the state, and PBGC if the plan was terminated.

Facts on this page match our official-source guides, last checked 23 October 2026. Rules and screens change, so follow the agency's own instructions.

Questions people ask

What happens to uncashed 401(k) checks?

Many checks print a "void after" date. Call the plan administrator, who can tell you if it is still valid or can be reissued. If the plan could not reach you, a state may hold the balance.

What happens if you do not cash a 401(k) check?

The money does not vanish, but the check may go stale. Contact the administrator on the check and ask for a reissue.

What happens to an unclaimed 401(k)?

States may hold the balance after a plan cannot reach you. Search your state and the federal retirement searches.

Is there a free federal database for lost retirement accounts?

Yes. The U.S. Department of Labor runs the Retirement Savings Lost and Found database, and PBGC's search covers terminated plans. Neither charges a fee.
